Help Shepherd Community provide quality education for children in poverty
At Shepherd Community Center, it is our vision to see every child in our neighborhood learn to read and write so they can break the cycle of poverty. Shepherd wants to see students excelling at or beyond grade-level and achieve the academic outcomes that are key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Shepherd helps students combat learning loss and provides quality education for all our neighborhood children by:
- Providing safety and learning for 67 children and babies at Minnie Hartmann Neighborhood Childcare.
- Educating 156 students in our Academy, 200 students K-12 in Summer, and 184 students in After-School programming.
- Launching an IndyPL School Library at Shepherd Community, connecting neighbors and students with their own library card, books, and resources.
- Adding a reading specialist, reading tutor, and Title I tutor to support our Academy students.
- Having 44 Shepherd students currently enrolled in college.
- Assisting students in applying and receiving college scholarships.
- Integrating more STEM and technology education.
- Initiating literacy-focused conversations with parents, connecting parents to resources to help meet those needs.
- Helping young neighborhood children get an early start on reading by bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the 46201 & 46203 zip codes.
Shepherd’s goal is to have 90% of Shepherd Academy students performing at or above grade level by 2023, with all students at reading level by 3rd grade and math by 4th grade.
