Academic Ministries
History
The Academy was one of Shepherd’s first programs for our neighborhood. What started as a small preschool now serves over 120 students from K3 through 3rd grade.
Program
The Academy seeks to provide a loving and supporting educational environment where each child's physical, emotional, academic, and spiritual skills can be developed. Each student receives a nutritious breakfast and lunch everyday, and are taught and expected to maintain habits such as:
- Obedience
- Respect for others and property
- Honesty
- Self-control
- Diligence
The Academy utilizes a faith-based curriculum called A Beka, which has a strong emphasis on phonics to help ensure that students learn to read by the time they leave kindergarten. A Beka also has a strong emphasis on numeration, writing, and Bible lessons which helps our students build a solid foundation for a successful academic career.
Objectives and Outcomes
The teachers work with the children to achieve realistic goals for their educational development, such as:
- 80% of the students will score above average on their IPS entrance exams
- 100% of the students will be able to read fluently by the time they graduate Kindergarten
- 100% of the Hispanic students will master English at their age appropriate level
- Increased understanding of the Bible and scripture memorization
- Increased knowledge and understanding of academic subject matter
- Increased or maintained satisfactory levels of attentiveness, cooperation, effort, obedience, and responsibilities
We believe that if our students can achieve these goals and behaviors, they will develop the tools to break the cycle of poverty and help others around them to do the same.
