Praise Pandemic Steel Orchestra
By definition a "Pandemic" is an infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region; Our Goal as a ministry is to fulfill the great commission and spread God's Love to the ends of the Earth....... GET INFECTED!!
Shepherd's Praise Pandemic Steel Orchestra (formerly known as the Whole Person Steel Orchestra) began in the summer of 2005. In 2008 the band was restructured and re-named Praise Pandemic, and through this distinctive music ministry, young people have learned valuable life lessons and skills while playing drums, steel pan, and other percussion instruments. This particular music program focuses on strengthening individual disciplines fostering team work and increasing the students’ musical awareness and ability. All the participants will explore forms of expression and develop skills and traits such as commitment, determination, and perseverance. The design of this program provides a natural progression of skill and technique as the kids learn the basics and importance of each instrument and how their instrument and their individual contribution is important to the group.Over the past four years, Shepherd Community Center has been proud to provide this opportunity to our students and the community; allowing them to experience this international phenomenon first hand.
Since its inception, twenty-five students have been involved in the band. Presently, seven of those students have graduated (all pursuing a college career) and five of those seven have been with the band since its inception. Composed of several types of pans spanning more than five octaves, the instruments are widely accepted as an art form. Several major colleges have included Steel Pan as part of their musical programs and national organizations encourage the music and support the movement of the instrument across the globe.
