'The Heart of the City' Summer Intern Project

Indianapolis is known for many things; the Indianapolis 500 (the largest, one-day, spectator sporting event in the world), the Circle City, the Crossroads of America, an amateur sports leader, and an emerging center for the arts. But a section of this great city has one of the highest concentrations of abandoned homes in the United States. Eight out of every ten children in our neighborhood get two meals a day only when they’re in school. Less than 30% of students graduate from high school and more than 50% of adults are illiterate.
Poverty is stubborn. Random acts of kindness won't budge it – well intentioned as they may be. It takes methodical, consistent programming that reaches both parents and children. Only when the entire family is working together do the shackles of poverty begin to loosen. It takes what we call a Continuum of Care from mothers-to-be through childhood and into adulthood. We invite you to come and make a difference for eternity in this world around Shepherd Community Center through our summer project experience. Our number one commitment for the summer is to your growth as a college student both spiritually and as a leader. Come join us!
‘The Heart of the City’ Summer Intern Project is designed to offer young, emerging leaders a dynamic hands-on ministry experience in the urban culture. This is available to students who have finished at least one year of college. Shepherd Community Center has a rich history of working with college student interns for the past eighteen years. You will be immersed in ministry with children and teens during the day which may include: teaching day camps, mentoring high school students in college applications, a week-long educational trip with teens, evangelistic outreaches, and work projects. Spiritual and personal development will be fostered in a community atmosphere with thirty student interns.
There will be excellent training, discipleship, and a staff mentor for the summer. Your housing and most meals will be provided. You will also be given and a small per diem during the summer to help with incidental expenses and some meals. This will be one of the highest quality and least expensive full-summer mission projects you can find. Are you ready for an adventure that will mark your life and send you back to campus and into life with a purpose?
