    Curtis Adkins
    Director of College Access

Curtis has worked at Shepherd Community Center for three years, but he became part of the Shepherd Family when he was 15. Discouraged and put down for most of his adolescence, he got involved with our High School Program and was built back up at Shepherd. The staff gave him hope, provided joy, and helped him achieve his goals. He went on to not only graduate high school but also college receiving a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with an emphasis in Christian Counseling and Vocational Ministries.

He came back to Shepherd Community Center as a staff member three years ago to help provide other teenagers what he was given. He worked with Jay Height, Director of Shepherd Community Center, to start the College Access Program.

When asked why this program is so important to him, Curtis replies, “It was the people here that had the greatest impact on my life. The people here at Shepherd helped me with all the details in my life. Because they helped me work through the details and they set expectations for me, I was able to succeed.”

Curtis believes in all the students he works with and starts introducing the expectation of college to the Shepherd kids in Kindergarten. It is our expectation that every one of our kids will go on to college and successfully complete a higher education program. Curtis knows that without help, teens can get overwhelmed with the process. “There are many things that need to be done in order for our students to get to college, and it is my responsibility to help them with the detail so they can focus on meeting the expectation,” says Curtis.

Curtis has gone from a hopeless teen to full of hope for both his life and for the lives he is touching. “My hope for them is that they can defeat the odds and succeed,” he says.

Curtis is proof that through education and love the cycle of poverty can be broken.

    SAT/ACT Prep

Our expectation for all of our students is that they will go on to college. To do so, they must take the ACT or SAT exam. We encourage them to take both. To help us help them study and prepare for the exams, we need the latest version of the prep books as well as the computer prep program. We also strive to cover the cost of taking the exams because many of our students can’t afford to pay for them out of pocket.
