Christmas Festival, 2009
Description: December 19, 2009. Christmas dinner became a Chirstmas Festival this year, with food, games, shows, fun and facepainting. About 500 of our neighbors attended the event.
Christmas Gift Shop 2009
Description: December 22, 2009. Even with the difficult economy Shepherd donors and volunteers rallied to provide more gifts for more people this year. We think God’s generous gift to us is easier to understand when we give generously to others. Thanks to all who helped, and Merry Christmas to all who participated.
Colts help Shepherd with Transportation Costs
Description: November 16, 2009. Indianapolis Colts mascot Blue was on hand when Colts officials presented Shepherd with a check for $18,000. The money will help defray the costs of transporting kids to Shepherd programs.
Thanksgiving, 2009
Description: November 21-22, 2009. As they have since 1985, volunteers from Westside Church of the Nazarene came here and invited Shepherd’s neighbors in for Thanksgiving dinner. On Saturday, there were two meals for our English-speaking neighbors, and one for Spanish speakers. On Sunday, volunteers from Indian Creek Christian Church personally delivered many of the 1,260 Thanksgiving Baskets to doorsteps in our neighborhood.
25th Anniversary Celebration Events
Description: November 20-21, 2009. As we enter into 2010, our 25th year, we took time to celebrate with our founders and many who have helped Shepherd in the past. There were also events just for Indianapolis-area pastors
Fall Festival, 2009
Description: October 31, 2009. Every Halloween, Shepherd offers a safe alternative to Trick or Treating. This year’s Fall Festival hosted about 300 kids some in costume, some not, and sent them home with armloads of goodies.
Car Seats for Shepherd kids
Description: September, 2009. One of Shepherd’s strengths is its partnerships with other organizations that care about our neighbors. In September, Safe Kids Buckle Up came to our parking lot and installed dozens of car seats free of charge.
Back to School Backpack Blast
Description: August, 2009. Even during these hard times, Shepherd still gave away 3,700 backpacks filled with school supplies. These are photos from Jireh Sports’ Backpack Blast. Shepherd also gave out backpacks at three other locations.
Summer Programs
Description: June-August, 2009. Shepherd’s summer programs involved 400 kids for nine weeks this year. They had plenty of fun, learned a few things, and ate well to boot. We served them 36,000 meals over the course of the summer.
Basketball Camp
Description: July, 2009. Shepherd’s annual basketball camp attracted some 200 boys and girls this year, from pre-schoolers to high-schoolers. In addition to the athletic education, all participants received shoes, shorts, shirts, socks, and a bag to carry it all.
Teen Summer Trip
Description: July, 2009. Every summer, Shepherd takes its teens on a trip. One of the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty is imagining what else is possible. Travel can expand a person’s horizons, and that’s why do it. We did scale back this year, though, and only went as far as Chicago.
Cows That Care
Description: May 6, 2009. Chick-fil-A brought their Cows That Care to feed and entertain kids in the after-school program at Shepherd. Chick-fil-A is heping support Shepherd with a special promotion during the month of May.
Easter at Shepherd
Description: April 12, 2009. Worship, Easter egg hunts, cute fuzzy critters, and good food — a great day for our neighbors
Samaritan’s Feet
Description: January 19, 2009. Samaritan’s Feet partnered with Shepherd Community Center to give shoes to 500 of our neighbors. We took the opportunity to wash their feet while we were at it.
Christmas, 2008
Description: December 20, 2008. Almost 750 people enjoyed a Christmas program and dinner. There were miniture horses dressed up as reindeer, and every child received a teddy bear.
Thanksgiving 2008
Description: November 22-23, 2008. About 700 of our neighbors shared a Thanksgiving meal with us, and 1,300 more received a holiday food basket!
Applebees Shooter Contest
Description: October, 2008. Middle- and high-school students in a cooking class at Shepherd compete to create a dessert for Applebee’s Restaurant
Chicken Project
Description: Middle-school students at Shepherd take on the challenge of raising chickens from scratch.
