Is it just a summer day camp?

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

This year in our attempt to better meet the needs of our community, we have worked hard to expand our summer day camp by almost 100%. Yes, a sense of being overwhelmed, but the realities are that even with this expansion… we are already full. Some would say, cut back, don’t try and do so much… easily said when it is only statistics we consider. But those statistics have names and faces.

Those statistics mean more than just a day camp… here are some other numbers to consider:

To feed these students we will serve 4000 meals a week for nine weeks.

    What do we need?

  • 83.6 boxes of whole grain cereal a week
  • 172.4 gallons of milk a week
  • 41.8 gallons of fruit juice
  • 1379 cans of vegetables and fruit each week
  • 117.5 pounds of meat and cheese

A bit overwhelming for us all. But what are the choices??? According to the USDA 8 out of 10 students in our neighborhood will not eat 2 meals a day this summer. 3200 of the 4000 weekly meals wouldn’t happen unless we provided them.

Doesn’t sound like a simple day camp to me??

This doesn’t include the 400 weekend food bags we will send home each Friday… the bag of groceries each student will take home several times through the summer.

Can you help?

Got Milk???

It’s more than a day camp… it’s about life. And you can help.
