we will never forget

Friday, April 20th, 2007

those words have been uttered many times this week in light of the tragedy at Virginia tech. yet, in weeks ahead life will become busy once again and we will not remember back to the moment when we first heard it. i thought of the morning of September 11th, a morning where it seemed as if time slowed to a crawl. We heard reports of more planes, attacks on the white house, america under attack.

this week i felt some of those same pains. i am moved by the heroic story of the Holocaust survivor, professor, who barricaded the door with his body so his students could have time to jump out the window, i am humbled by his actions. i have heard many times, “We will never forget”
yet, i know we will move on and we will forget. sadly, life moves on. So, the better idea is to not just say we will never forget, but to make a daily determination to change the world, one life at a time. we cannot move back in time (wouldn’t that be great), we can only be driven to making a difference in the days ahead.

the ups and downs

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

We have so many ups and downs with those we serve. we make progress and then we fall back and retreat. we see hope and then heartache. yet, we cannot stop, we know that. Victory comes in inches not miles. as we work with both the first and second generation to break the cycle in the second generation, we realize this will take decades.

yet, we live in a microwave world that wants results in a few minutes. breaking the cycle of poverty will not take minutes, days or even months but decades of commitments that begin at birth and is celebrated at the college graduation. yes, our programs journey with the students from birth to college. unfortunately, society wants answers to problems that have been built over 40 and 50 years.
